Simulation of the Dynamics of Supercooled Silica

چکیده
We present the results of a large scale computer simulation of su-percooled silica. We find that at high temperatures the diffusion constants show a non-Arrhenius temperature dependence whereas at low temperature this dependence is also compatible with an Arrhe-nius law. We demonstrate that at low temperatures the intermediate scattering function shows a two-step relaxation behavior and that it obeys the time temperature superposition principle. We also discuss the wave-vector dependence of the nonergodicity parameter and the time and temperature dependence of the non-Gaussian parameter.

Slow dynamics of supercooled water confined in nanoporous silica materials
We review our incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) studies of the dynamics of supercooled water confined in nanoporous silica materials. QENS data were analysed by using the relaxing cage model (RCM) previously developed by us. We first use molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the extended simple point charge model (SPC/E) for bulk supercooled water to establish the validity of th...
متن کاملObservation of the density minimum in deeply supercooled confined water
Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to measure the density of heavy water contained in 1D cylindrical pores of mesoporous silica material MCM-41-S-15, with pores of diameter of 15 1 Å. In these pores the homogenous nucleation process of bulk water at 235 K does not occur, and the liquid can be supercooled down to at least 160 K. The analysis of SANS data allows us to determine the abs...
متن کاملMolecular Dynamics Study of the Glass Transition in Confined Water
A molecular dynamics simulation of SPC/E water confined in a Silica pore is presented. The pore has been constructed to reproduce the average properties of a pore of Vycor glass. Due to the confinement and to the presence of a strong hydrophilic surface, the dynamic behaviour of the liquid appears to be strongly dependent on the hydration level. The approach to the glass transition of confined ...
متن کاملMicroviscosity of supercooled water confined within aminopropyl-modified mesoporous silica as studied by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.
The fluorescence dynamics of rhodamine B (RhB) immobilized on the pore surface of aminopropyl (AP)-modified mesoporous silica (diameter of the silica framework, 3.1 nm) was examined at temperatures between 293 and 193 K to study the microviscosity of supercooled water confined inside the pores. The mesoporous silica specimen with a dense AP layer (2.1 molecules nm(-2)) was prepared, and RhB iso...
متن کاملExamination of dynamic facilitation in molecular dynamics simulations of glass-forming liquids.
Using data from molecular dynamics computer simulations of the one-component Dzugutov liquid and of BKS silica in metastable equilibrium supercooled states, we examine ideas introduced by Garrahan and Chandler (GC) in their dynamic facilitation (DF) model of the glass transition. Utilizing a recently introduced measure of DF, we find that DF is important for particle motion in both the supercoo...
